Thoughts on The Favourite

February 4, 2019 ~ Chloë Prince ~ Leave a comment

The Favourite was darkly claustrophobic. Caged rabbits, festering wounds, maniacal fashions and constricting apparatus. For intrigue and acclaim, you need look no further in this brave new world of the historical costume drama… It feels stifling: Whether Queen Anne is stuffing her face with cake or Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough is looking down the … Continue reading Thoughts on The Favourite

She Noted: Preparing for Christmas

She Noted: Preparing for Christmas

It’s no secret that I adore this time of year. Having resumed my studies in the Country House, I’ve had the space to map out new historical content for readers and hope that in the meantime, you enjoy reading about the activities I’ve been indulging in this season. Having recently moved into our new house, […]

She Noted: Tabletop Talks – The Victorian Country House

When delivering a talk, my preparation varies depending on the topic. In this instance, I had made a last minute decision to switch the theme from the Elizabethan Prodigy House to the Victorian Country House as I’d been struggling to condense so sprawling a topic as the prodigy house and cult of sovereignty. It’s always […]

She Noted: A Restorative Weekend, With Friends

My cousin, his husband and their gorgeous little girl Billie recently took up residence in their new home. Darren and I were delighted to receive an invitation to stay for the weekend – setting out after work on a Friday evening to brave the M40 and arriving to settle into a wonderful few days. I’d […]

West Wycombe Park – Architects & Collectors

West Wycombe Park – Architects & Collectors

The remit of the architect is inseparable from the character of the collector, which they sought to accommodate. Indeed, the architecture of the country house was used to house great works of art and the purpose of the setting was to complement this accordingly. West Wycombe’s entrance hall is particularly theatrical in this case, taking […]

Thoughts On A Victorian Lady’s Guide to Fashion and Beauty by Mimi Matthews for fellow historians and readers

I often find myself wishing that I owned a stash of Victorian fashion magazines – perhaps those gorgeously volumnious bound editions that are practically bursting at the seams with patterns, tidbits and illustrated fashion plates. Sigh, there’s the dream. Until I have the luxury of even more shelf space, there are plenty of ways to […]

Life In Pictures @she.noted

Divine inspiration! Again, many thanks to @dickiekentchalk for taking such a wonderful photo - don't forget to zoom out to see Billie peeping in from her pew! On her bobble hat with a tie under the chin, I've never seen anything so adorable. Lovely memories from the weekend just gone playing host to such a wonderful people. @markchalkiles ✍ #shenoted #deardiary #dearreader #littlethings #gratitude #thankful #family #oldchurches #vintage #outandabout #adventures #comfortandjoy #smalljoys #historygirls #vintagegirl #historyblogger
A festive ride on the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Steam Railway! We enjoyed tea, coffee and biscuits - along with entertainment from a group of Mummers; something I’d never seen before! Darren gave me his scarf as I was getting a bit cold, ever the gentleman. It was a lovely - day; thanks to @dickiekentchalk (Dickie) for taking such wonderful photos of our day together, I’ll be sharing a few more later. 🚂 #shenoted #vintage #littlethings #steamrailway #traditional #local #oldfashioned #tistheseason #christmasiscoming #ourstory #adventures #outandabout #thankful #historygirls #historyblogger
Visited our local church, St Anthony’s, in Chinnor today for their Christmas Festival - which was wonderful. About 20 Christmas trees sponsored and dressed by different members of the community around the theme “All I want for Christmas is...” - this particular tree was “a vineyard!” (We admired it at length, of course)🍷 #shenoted #littlethings #christmas #festive #traditional #traditionalchristmas #oldfashioned #historygirls #heritage #historyblogger #oldchurches #communityspirit
INTO THE UNKNOOOOOOWN (yeah, I saw Frozen II and was suitably blown away) ❄️ #shenoted #vintage #merinowool #vintagewinter
Yesterday was one of those lovely brusque, cool days where one anticipates an overnight frost. We had sample sales at work and I picked out this merino wool jumper, made in Ireland. It’s ever so cosy. Still over here wishing that I had access to the entirety of Margaret’s wardrobe in The Crown! PS, Darling Kat took this photo. 👜 #shenoted #vintage #vintagestyle #vintagegirl #1950s #thecrown #midcentury #cosyknits #handknitted #historygirls #historyblogger #antiques #oldfashioned #1930s #vintagefashion #1940s #wiwt #ootd #cosy #vintageknit
The current state of my bedside table - the loveliest little mice lampshade from @dunelmuk, the evening’s reading, dressing table bits, a rosary gifted from a late friend of my grandfather and his own wartime medal still in its original box with the inscription. My engagement ring is there too as I take it off in the evenings so that it won’t catch on the bedclothes. 🐑 #shenoted #countryside #vintage #antiques #vintagegirl #oldfashioned #cosy #traditional #heirlooms #dressingtable #treasures #historyblogger #historygirls #bookish #goodnightworld #homemaking #nesting #ourhome #ofcosymoments #littlethings #countrygirlatheart
